Deadly Slab Collapses in Virar
Updated : July 16, 2025
Overview of the Incident
In the last few weeks, the Vasai-Virar region of Maharashtra has witnessed multiple slab collapse incidents, leading to tragic loss of life and injuries. The most recent collapse occurred on Friday in Virar West, claiming the life of a 54-year-old woman. This marks the third such incident in just 11 days, sending shockwaves through local communities.
What Caused the Slab Collapses?
Aging Infrastructure: Many buildings in the Vasai-Virar belt are 20–30+ years old, some even categorized as C1 — dangerous.
Monsoon Damage: Continuous rain during the monsoon weakens slabs and ceilings.
Poor Maintenance: Leaky roofs, unattended cracks, and inadequate repairs contribute to structural failures.
Negligence: In most cases, residents report complaints being ignored by society management or builders
What Are Authorities Doing About It?
The VVCMC has identified several “dangerous buildings” and issued eviction notices to residents.
Structural audits are being mandated for older societies.
However, many residents remain unaware of their building’s risk level or fail to act promptly..
